High on a mountaintop in Peru stands an ancient Inca city called Machu Picchu. About 800,000 tourists visit the city each year. However, some people are worried about the treasured ruins of Machu Picchu. They are also
worried about the safety of visitors. Scientists have noted the negative effects that tourists have on the ruins.
Machu Picchu was never made for so many people. It was made for sandals and bare feet. Boots and hiking
shoes leave scars upon the city walls. The busy road leading to Machu Picchu is also a problem. It often has
mudslides. Tourists visiting the city could be hurt.
