In 1885, Sarah Goode designed a new type of bed. She owned a Chicago furniture store
and knew her customers often lacked space in their homes. So she created a bed that
would fold up into a desk. Likewise, Benjamin Franklin Invented a library chair that could
fold into a small step ladder in the 1700s. For her Invention, Sarah Goode became the
first African American woman to receive a United States patent. That is, she received
credit for her Invention, and nobody else could make or sell it.
