Edward reached his appointed destination at midnight. He was used to the chilly climate of northern England, so the winter didn't bother him. But there was something about the late-December Berkshire air that made him shiver. It was difficult for Edward to trace the reason for his discomfort; it was much greater than just the cold. Some unnatural fear had gripped Edward's heart from the moment he had laid eyes on the grand Heathridge Manor that stood before him. Every instinct in his body told Edward to turn back and run as far away as possible.​
