Hold back the end of summer
Let the ocean of waves warm our shores
Another week or two to give
Our old and tired feet
A warm reviving wade

Let the sails of summer dry
Another while in the sun.
Lure us to find sparkling waves,
And put on turtle-shaped jewels
For the still ocean's calm beauty

Let the tropical heat churn the Earth
More slowly in its gallop round the sun.
And put off getting on in the world,
The papers and books of structured days,
For one more sunset's-flash moment
Of simple molecules and moisture.
