Negative Effects of Keeping Animals in Zoos

Not even the city zoos are safe. At the London Zoo this month, 11 South African penguins were attacked and killed by a wild animal that lives in the city—the fox. Although the penguin pool is normally surrounded by a fence, this pool had been damaged in 2008 and never repaired. The urban fox, known for its intelligence, can easily detect breakages and openings in fences and enclosures.

Biologists conducted a study on the life span of elephants that live in different environments. They studied elephants living in the wild and elephants living zoos. The study showed a marked difference in the life span of the elephants. It was concluded that the size of the environment makes a big difference in how long elephants are able to live.
