ASSIGNMENT: Write a formal boast about Emma or about YOURSELF
GUIDELINES. Your boast must show your understanding of Anglo-Saxon poetry by following the
Anglo-Saxon poetic format:
Self-identification (I am daughterĹżson of
• Your immediate ancestry and something about your lineage (daddy/mama)
. Your bravery (not gonna take nothin' from nobody)
• Your beliefs (honor, glory, loyalty, honesty, decency, etc.)
• Boasts of at least 3 past achievements (academic athletic musical, social, artistic complete lies, etc.)
• Boast of achievements to come (you can make these as outlandish as you like)
• Include at least 3 identifiable kennings (compound expression w/ metaphorical meaning)
Examples of modern-day kennings:
• Ankle biter = a very young child
• Bean counter = a bookkeeper or accountant
• Bookworm = someone who reads a lot
• Brown noser = a person who does anything to gain approval
• Fender bender = a car accident
• King of the barbeque-good griller
• Include at least 3 alliterative phrases (repeated first consonant sound)
Examples of alliteration that are also kennings:
• Maker of marvelous meals
Death-dealer
• Brain-basher
• Car commander
Examples of alliteration that is not a kenning (alliterations don't have to be kennings)
• decided my delicacies were delectable
