A student attended a science and technology conference, and the student now needs to write a narrative about the conference as part of a thank- you letter to a donor who helped pay for the trip. Read the draft of the narrative and complete the task that follows.
Ten members of our high school science club attended the conference. We were all very excited last Sunday when we boarded a chartered bus
for the overnight trip to Washington, D. C. The bus was full because science clubs from four different high schools went together. By chance, the
girl who sat next to me on the bus, Joy, wants to study physics as I do. This is the only time I have ever spent hours discussing matter with
someone my age! The conference was held at a major university, and we all stayed in the dormitories where students usually live when college
is in session. By the end of the trip, students from the different schools had become friends, and we even started a regional science club that will
hold its first meeting once school starts next month.
Every moment of the conference was devoted to science and technology. There were so many fascinating sessions that it was sometimes hard to
choose one over another. I went to a lecture on nanotechnology because I had never heard that term before; I learned there is a whole research
field devoted to manipulating things on a molecular and atomic scale. This meant I could not go to a session called “Approaching Invisibility:
Now You See It, Now You Don't." Unfortunately, I will have to study the frontiers of invisibility on my own. I learned new things even outside
of the sessions: one night I attended a dinner that served ice cream frozen on the spot with liquid nitrogen.
Write an introduction to the narrative that sets up the action to come and introduces the narrator.
