By early 1862, an average of 60,000 Union soldiers were sick every day
and the death rate from disease was costing the army the equivalent of
27 regiments a year. McClellan's attempt to capture the Confederate
capitol at Richmond failed, when General Robert E. Lee stopped him in
the Battle of Seven Days (June 25-July 1). Union troops were also
defeated at Bull Run and were driven back when they attempted to
capture Vicksburg, Mississippi. The capture of Vicksburg would have
given the Union control of the vital Mississippi River.
