Directions and Analysis Task 1(a): Writing a chapter of a novel
In this activity, you will write a chapter of a novel that you have envisioned.
You would have already created/written down the plot, setting, and characters for your novel
in a previous lesson. If your teacher excluded those lessons, you may need to spend half an
hour writing them.
The chapter you write will most likely be the opening chapter of your planned novel, but need
not be.
If it is not the opening chapter, you may write a single paragraph “back story" (explaining what
the current situation in the novel is and how the characters got there.) You may also need
another paragraph to explain the current predicament of your key characters (note that some
of the key characters may not actually be"in the scene" in the chapter that you are writing.
However, the reader will have to know who they are to understand the overall plot of the novel
or to make sense of references to them in your chapter.).
