nutrients, including carbon and nitrogen, are locked into the tissues of every plant or
animal. As a decomposer feeds on a dead organism, it digests that organism's
tissue. It then releases nourishing by-products from the organism into the soil.
Those by-products are absorbed by new plant growth, which in turn supports both
plant-eating and meat-eating animals.
