This project will give you an opportunity to learn about sub-Saharan Africa through a book study activity. You will be reading a nonfiction text, which you will find either in your local library or through Internet research. Then, you will write a short essay summarizing the main ideas of your selected text. When you begin the search for a book, your first step should be to narrow your field of focus. Ask yourself: What exactly am I looking for? Conducting research for any nonfiction text about sub-Saharan Africa will likely bring you to an overwhelming number of results, so it will be helpful to choose a key topic and go from there. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to focus your search:

Is there a particular geographical area of Africa that is most interesting to me?
Are there any recent current events that I am interested in learning more about?
What do I already know about Africa? Do I want to know more about one of those topics?
Am I most interested in a book that focuses on an economic, social, or political topic?
Economic topics related to sub-Saharan Africa include economic struggles in African countries, the impact of the slave trade on the African economy, the overuse of natural resources in parts of Africa, etc.
Social topics related to sub-Saharan Africa include the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a concept called "brain drain," and religious and cultural conflict.
Political topics related to Sub-Saharan Africa include political unrest, the impact of colonialism on government, and etc.
