Well, sometimes you have to be taught how to appreciate an extraordinary skill. I’m not good at music, but I’ll try to use an example. In 7th grade, I was in the school’s choir. I had sung along with hits on the radio and assume anyone could sing, as it seemed so effortless for people. The radio was so loud, I couldn’t hear myself. My teacher mostly ignored me, dotting on a girl who had exceptional talent in singing. One day, she handed out songs and said we’d wing them in front of the class a week later. As the joke is always, I got a lullaby. “Sleep little angel, now rest thee in sleep, mother will rock thee and watch over thee keep.” The teacher didn’t hate me enough to do that, just got the bad pick of the pile. I can still remember the piano playing as I went through the entire song. I was out-of-tune and made some strange notes. The other students stared in awkward silence. I didn’t sing ever again in that class and never signed up for choir ever again.

Many people don’t try things they insult. While I don’t have an ear for music, I can tell if someone is a quality singer or has an ability. With painting, sports, and other things, many people only appreciate that they relate to. Many people will feel threatened if someone does better than what they can do and will attack someone with more talent.
