Suddenly, the guns on the slope roared out a message of warning. A sputtering sound of a new battle had begun in the woods. It swelled with amazing speed to a profound clamor that involved the earth in noises. The splitting crashes swept along the lines until an interminable roar was developed. To those in the midst of it, it became a din fitted to the universe. It was the whirring and thumping of gigantic machinery. The youth's ears were filled up. They were incapable of hearing more. In terms of human casualties, the Civil War cost more than any other American war. About one million men were killed or wounded. Deaths, including those from disease, totaled 529,332. By comparison, about 116,500 Americans died in World War I and 405,500 in World War II. The North lost 364,511 men; the South, 164,821. Disease killed more men than bullets did. About 140,000 Union men and 75,000 Confederates died in battle.
