4) Joe Leaphorn was a fictional character which has created by Tony Hillerman, who was a mystery writer. He was as traditional as his grandfather. He valued him a lot. He was a police officer and to handle the crimes he used his Navajo believes. He uncovered the culprits using his old traditional belief-system. In Navajo, they believed that nature and man depend upon each other. Moreover, we can’t separate them. He doesn't trust O'Mallery and possess the character by Federal agencies. He doesnot intervene with the quality. Despite his traditional views, he was restricted to some taboo of Navajo beliefs.  He was of the view that many people believe in those systems, which resulted in violence.
Furthermore, he was the person who can change himself according to the character the people around him want to be. He was trying  change himself the way white men live. Because he was unable to understand, Ted Issac left his love of life when she needed him.
