Mom: (loud, stern voice, calling upstairs) shannon, get down here right now!

shannon: what is it, mom?

mom: i hear you’re planning on sneaking out tonight to go to the midnight madness sale at lakeview mall. is that true?

shannon (sweet, friendly voice): definitely, mom!

mom: what on earth do you mean, “definitely, mom”?

shannon: well, everybody’s going!

mom: oh, is that right? and if everybody jumped into a lake….

shannon: but mom, it’s the biggest event of the year! up to 70 percent off department store prices on
all of my favorite designer brands!

mom: i’m sorry, what was that?

shannon: up to 70 percent off, mom! not to mention free giveaways for the first 100 shoppers! all starting at midnight.

mom: shannon, i’m very disappointed in you.

shannon: but mom!

mom: did it ever occur to you that i might want to join you? i may be your mother, but i still want to look great—especially at a fraction of the cost!

shannon: i’m sorry, mom.

mom (whispers): that’s okay; we’ll sneak out tonight. just don’t tell your sister.

announcer: the secret is out! so sneak away on july 7th for midnight madness at lakeview mall in riverside. look great. pay less.

Read the passage: canines may not be the deepest thinkers in the world. but perhaps that's for the best. the life of a dog—sitting alone all day, waiting for everyone to come home—can be pretty boring. super-smart animals would probably get totally stressed out, says university of pennsylvania researcher james serpell. look at it this way: if dogs were any smarter, they probably wouldn't choose to hang around with us. which best describes the tone of the passage?
