These lines show Beowulf's immense, superhuman (that is, heroic) strength, so great that even the monster Grendel has never seen a man so strong. As the reader would learn a few lines later, precisely this physical strength is the only weapon with which it is possible to kill Grendel, as he can't be killed with any blade. This heroic strength leaves an even greater impact on the reader after the scene in which Grendel kills and devours one of Beowulf's soldiers.
