The settings in the Inferno reveal Dante's opinions about justice as can be seen below:

Dante has created a world in which the sins that he believes are more widespread in the world are punished accordingly, in specific ways that he believes are fair. The idea seems to be that god will be fair when the time will come.

For example:

•At the entrance, Dante comes across limbo which is a place where people who do not believe in the existence of God are. This shows that Dante believes that people who are not the followers of Christianity, such as pagans, do not deserve a very cruel punishment.

•In a different example, when Dante sees the Fourth Circle of Hell, where people overcome with greed are, he finds that both types of people are there- those who hoarded wealth and also those who wasted it. This means that it was Dante’s belief that both the sins are equally bad and they deserve equal punishment.

Dante (the character) often expresses pity for all the people who are forced to suffer in Hell but that shows just his empathy.

The setting is significant because the organizing of Hell into nine circles tells us about Dante's belief in an orderly world.
