 “American giant” is an appropriate description of Theodore Roosevelt for many reasons. Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest person to take oath of office, being only 42 years old at the time. He named the White House the “White House.” He was also the first president to invite a black man (Booker T. Washington) to have dinner with him in the White House.

Theodore Roosevelt was a very fearless, strong, and influential man. He was a hunter who loved the outdoors and actively pursued environmental concerns. He reserved huge amounts of land for parks and monuments.

  He was so fearless, that vice President Thomas Marshall said about him when he died, "Death had to take him sleeping, for if Roosevelt had been awake, there would have been a fight."

He was the first American to win a Noble Peace Prize, after working on a treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War. Roosevelt did little things that later effected America greatly, such as building the Panama Canal. He wanted a strong navy, and the canal would help them get around more quickly.

President Roosevelt was America’s first “modern” president. He understood and used the media to influence his people. Roosevelt was the first president to travel abroad. He was the first president to ride a car in public (his guards had to use bikes to keep up with him). And, he was the first to fly on a plane and to submerge in a submarine.

So, he definitely deserves the description of “American giant,” because he not only was a great president that the majority loved, he was a hero who not only helped his country prosper, but helped others as well.
