the straw, a play by eugene o'neill, is set in a factory town in connecticut around the year 1910. at the opening of the play, bill carmody is waiting for doctor gaynor to finish examining
carmody's daughter eileen. carmody, a widower, called the doctor in earlier, when eileen fainted.

using what you know from reading the play, revise the introduction to add dramatic irony. then, explain in one or two sentences how your revision added dramatic irony.

We were there, in the waiting room, patient and trusting, waiting for Doctor Gaynor, the only doctor in the town, to examine my daughter Eileen. The only doctor, whose study notes left much to be desired, and obviously could never be wrong in their diagnosis, was the only hope we had left to know what had happened to my daughter to faint.

Here the dramatic irony is observed when referring to the low grades with which Doctor Gaynor obtained his diploma, questioning his ability as a doctor. To make matters worse, being the only doctor in the town, he was the only person who could attend Eileen, with which the situation of insecurity that Bill Carmody feels is ironically dramatic.
