Well if you protect yourself thats a good thing we want to grow our population up 

Conservation efforts when it comes to flora and fauna have greatly reduced the rate at which species are going extinct. Like the American Bison, for example. They were almost completely wiped out, but now conservationists are helping to build up their populations. In the sense of ecosystems in general, the quality of soil, water, air, etc. has improved in many areas. Conservationists can protest and keep big, harmful companies from polluting an area because of the wildlife there. Pollution is a detrimental factor when it comes to the deterioration of ecosystems, so it is very important that conservationists do what they can to protect what little untouched land we have left.
