The Harlem Renaissance, also known as the 'Negro movement' was a cultural, artistic and social movement that took place in NY city during the 1920s decade. This movement comprised the African American cultural expressions that took place in urban areas in the Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the US, as a result of the Great Migration performed by African Americans, in which Harlem played a prominent role as main destination.

The Great Migration was the transfer of six million of African-American US citizens from Southern rural areas to cities in the Northeast, Midwest and Western regions of the country, that had ocurred between 1916 and 1970. In 1910, 90% of US African Americans lived in rural areas in the South, and from this decade onwards these figures reversed.
