animal farm an allegory
the book ‘animal farm’ by george orwell is an allegorical piece of russian revolution, which took place in 1971. this rebellion ended the centuries of imperial rule and settled political and social change and so did the battle of cowshed in the book. many characters in manor farm symbolize the people in russia. this essay compares old major, the pig to karl marx, a social activist.
orwell describes old major as an intelligent and wise hog, who is not satisfied by the way mr. jones deals with the animals and the farm. mr. jones is almost always too drunk to feed the animals well. orwell also gives major a gist of philosophy where he mentions: “i feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom as i have acquired. i have had a long life, i have had much time for thought as i lay alone in my stall, and i think i may say that i understand the nature of life on this earth as well as any animal now living.” (animal farm, 1945, p.2). this evidence states that major was an animal with sanity and is highly honored that the animals were ready to contribute 1 hour of their sleep to the allocution. like old major, karl marx was also a judicious man who did philosophy. similarly, marx was also discontented by the government. in 1848, marx and fellow german thinker friedrich engels published “the communist manifesto,” which introduced their concept of socialism as a natural result of the conflicts inherent in the capitalist system. (history. com staff, 2009). this was a political based book which introduced communism.
furthermore, marx and old major gave the idea of communism in their community. marx invented communism, whereas the boar taught ‘animalism’. through marx’s writing about “communist manifesto”, marx depicts the idea of communism.(wolf & jonathan, 2015).in chapter i old major says”‘and now, comrades, i will tell you about my dream of last night. i cannot describe that dream to you. it was a dream of the earth as it will be when man has vanished.” (animal farm, 1945, p.4) these ideas lead to the battle in both places.
moreover, both of them die before the rebellion. old major dies the night after the speech. this is stated as “three nights later old major died peacefully in his sleep. his body was buried at the foot of the orchard. this was early in march.” (animal farm, 1945, p.6). much like old major, karl marx also dies before the rebellion. “marx died of pleurisy in london on march 14, 1883.” (biography. com editors, 2014). it’s a coincidence that they both died in early march. furthermore the both are not buried at their own places. for instance, old major was buried at the end of the farm and marx was entombed in london.

Read this paragraph from chapter 5 of the prince. there are, for example, the spartans and the romans. the spartans held athens and thebes, establishing there an oligarchy: nevertheless they lost them. the romans, in order to hold capua, carthage, and numantia, dismantled them, and did not lose them. they wished to hold greece as the spartans held it, making it free and permitting its laws, and did not succeed. so to hold it they were compelled to dismantle many cities in the country, for in truth there is no safe way to retain them otherwise than by ruining them. and he who becomes master of a city accustomed to freedom and does not destroy it, may expect to be destroyed by it, for in rebellion it has always the watchword of liberty and its ancient privileges as a rallying point, which neither time nor benefits will ever cause it to forget. and whatever you may do or provide against, they never forget that name or their privileges unless they are disunited or dispersed, but at every chance they immediately rally to them, as pisa after the hundred years she had been held in bondage by the florentines. what idea is stressed in the passage? the desire for liberty the establishment of an oligarchy the dismantling of an acquired state the tendency toward rebellion
