In Nectar in a "Sieve", Rukmani is unable to bear a son for seven long years. during this time, you can see how this takes a toll on her. Eventually she is so disturbed by this that she goes to a foreign doctor, who treats her and then she bears five sons in quick succession. This lightens the tension and guilt that she had been carrying with her for all those years, but with each son born, the family has less to eat. Over and over, the phenomenon comes up in this story, where something good happens to their family but then shortly after something bad happens to bring the prosperity they had a glance at right back down to poverty. I think that the spring in "Work Without Hope" is representative of this. with spring comes hope, but there is always another winter coming. This is the most similar thing between the two stories.
