the mysteries of stonehenge

(1) for hundreds of years, the stonehenge monument in england has caught the attention of millions of people. (2) while people have many questions about stonehenge, there are not so many answers. (3) people continue to think of new, intriguing theories about how the giant mysterious monument was built. (4) however, no one knows for sure. (5) maybe this is part of what makes stonehenge so incredibly interesting. (6) this doorway to the past is a mystery, and it probably always will be.

(7) what does this monument look like? (8) the stone structure, which is one of several monuments, gets the most attention and fame. (9) it was built during the last part of the stone age. (10) it stands on the salisbury plain. (11) this is a large meadow in the english county of wiltshire. (12) stonehenge may have been built as long ago as 3100 bce. (13) the date it was built is one of the mysteries surrounding stonehenge. (14) some of the stones date back to 2500, and 2000 bce. (15) that leads some people to think the monument was built over a period of perhaps 2,000 years. (16) this means stonehenge was probably built in stages. (17) experts have studied the monument for a long time, but no one understands how it was built.

(18) think about the impressive acts of construction involved in building this monument! (19) for one thing, some of the huge stones came from places very far away from the site. (20) scientists know that some came from wales, which is 150 miles away. (21) that would be an easy job today, but it was not easy 5,000 years ago. (22) how did the people of that time accomplish this task? (23) some scientists think the stones were brought by hand; they think people pulled the stones with ropes across the land or carried them by sea on boats. (24) others say that it is unlikely ancient boats could have stayed afloat under such a weight. (25) still others believe the stones were carried by large glaciers that moved across the ocean over the thousands of years following the last ice age. (26) the argument follows that once the stones were on the site, building the monument was easy. (27) even if we knew the answers to these questions, who was the monument meant to celebrate?
