In this question, I think the highlighted metaphor is DIRT-DISAPPOINTED.

Dirt and Disappointed are two very contrasting things or ideas. However, when these two words are brought together, it gives a new meaning. It means extreme disappointment. It is like having your hopes and dreams almost at your hands but before you can grab them, they fall and crash leaving you crushed.

The pickers were dirt-disappointed because no matter how many fruits they picked, it still was not enough to get a higher pay to feed their family at home.
