what they owed him.

instead
from King of the Mountain
Kids used to play this game. Maybe they still do. We used to play it on a
short hill covered with slick grass, pushing "attackers" away from the top and
making them slide and tumble down.
My old man played it for real one time, in a grocery store version of the
game.
By the end of 1940 my father had the only grocery store and meat market
in town: he was King of the Mountain.
4 The store seemed huge to me at the time. Four big plate-glass windows in
the front; two large meat cases; displays of vegetables; and plenty of shelves
and alsles of canned goods to keep stocked. My dad's customers included
everybody in the community, naturally, since he was the only game in town.
5
The storefront was white and the big sign above the windows was painted
black. It said: QUICK'S QUALITY MARKET. He was serious about the "quality"
part of the statement
5
The black-and-white sign would have created a somber appearance to the
store had it not been for the hand-painted messages my dad would put in the
windows: announcements painted in red and blue tempera paint on long
O 2. The townspeople deeply appreciated the way
his father treated them
