Project: The Countries We Visit There have been many lists of the Wonders of the World. The first known list was called the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was based on guidebooks used by the ancient Greeks and only included places around the Mediterranean rim. The Greeks chose the number seven because they thought it represented perfection and plenty.

In 2001, a Swiss corporation called New7Wonders Foundation launched an initiative to choose a new list from among two hundred existing monuments. In 2007, one hundred million people voted online for their choices of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The results were:

The Great Pyramid of Giza was named an honorary candidate in deference to the Egyptians, who were unhappy that the pyramid would have to compete with monuments such as the Statue of Liberty.

Your assignment is to create a PowerPoint presentation of one of the New Seven Wonders of the World that will outline a vacation for a traveler visiting that site. Using online sources, research the site and find out about its history. Why do you think it was included on the New Seven Wonders of the World? What can a traveler do at the site?

You should include activities at the site that would last for one day. List two other areas of that country that the traveler may want to visit during an additional two days of the vacation. Also, describe the transportation the visitor will have to take to the site from the community in which you live, listing travel times. You should also include recommendations for lodging and describe the type of restaurants a traveler may find in the areas.

Create a PowerPoint presentation of your recommended trip to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and two additional places to visit in the same country. You may use bullet points to illustrate the three sites the traveler will visit and to list the recommended hotels.

A panel was formed by an organisation called The New Seven wonders of the World Foundation, in 2007. Initially the United Nations World Heritage List was involved, but they did not agree with how the decision was made, so they did not take part in the final decision.

How many of the seven wonders of the world still exist?

It depends which seven wonders. The idea as become so popular that numerous organizations have created different versions.

The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World were:

The Collossus of Rhodes

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Pharos of Alexandria (basically a giant lighthouse)

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The Temple of Artemis

The Great Pyramid at Giza

Of these seven only the Pyramid has survived. Most of the others were destroyed by earthquakes. The American society of Engineers made a list of the Wonders of the Modern World, all of which are still standing.

The ancient Greek historian and travel writer Herodotus is traditionally given the credit. His original list has been lost, but lots of other people wrote lists and said they were copies of Herodotus's list. Whether they were accurate or not, there's no way to know. Some lists are clearly not original with Herodotus because they include things that were built after he died.

Everything on the “original” list has been destroyed except for the Pyramids of Giza, and some, such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, may have been fictitious in the first place.

Why are there only seven Wonders of the World? Who decided upon them?

There’s no particular reason for it to be seven, specifically, beyond literary precedent. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Greek and Roman authors did a significant amount of travel writing, since they could easily visit a variety of places around the Mediterranean and Near East. And they started compiling lists of things they felt were really worth seeing. Antipater of Sidon and Philo of Byzantium, writing in the 2nd century BC, are among the first to compile lists of seven such places. Seven appears to have been a convenient number for other authors, so many repeated their pattern.
