one day i wrote her name upon the strand,
but came the waves and washed it away:
again i wrote it with a second hand,
but came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
“vain man,” said she, “that dost in vain assay.
a mortal thing so to immortalize,
for i myself shall like to this decay.
and eek my name be wiped out likewise.”
“not so,” quod i, “let baser things devise
to die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
my verse your virtues rare shall eternize,
and in the heavens write your glorious name.
where when as death shall all the world subdue,
our love shall live, and later life renew.”
in the opening quatrain, what action does the poet describe?
a)walking with his lover on the sand
b)trying to stop the advancing tide
c)writing his lover’s name in the sand

What type of figurative language is used in this passage from "letter from birmingham jail"? just as the prophets of the eighth century b.c. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the lord" far beyond the boundaries of their hometowns, and just as the apostle paul left his village of tarsus and carried the gospel of jesus christ to the far corners of the greco roman world, so am i compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own hometown. allusion symbolism imagery metaphor
