Anise and fennel are both flowering plants in the carrot family. Anise is native to Southwest Asia and the eastern Mediterranean region, but fennel is native specifically to
the shores of the Mediterranean. The two are often confused for one another because
they share a similar flavor profile that of black licorice. However, only the seeds of anise
are edible, whereas the entire fennel plant can be eaten. The fennel bulb can be served
as a vegetable, while the leaves and seeds are often used to flavor soups, sauces, meats,
and teas. Just like fennel seeds, anise seeds are used to flavor teas and a wide variety of
dishes. In addition, they are used in the production of essential oils.
