1. Write one introductory paragraph for an essay that asks you to analyze specific rhetorical purposes of F. Scott
Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. In other words, identify two or three traits from The Great Gatsby that help establish
what Fitzgerald is trying to accomplish from the novel. Because this is an introductory paragraph, you will probably not
need to use textual evidence, but you should consider (1) an engaging opening, (2) transition sentences, and most
importantly, (3) a clear and concise thesis statement. To find elements of rhetorical purpose, you can look for
moments in the novel where Fitzgerald uses figurative language, focuses on Nick as a third-person (limited) narrator, creates tension or suspense through diction and syntax etc
