Read the excerpt from the story Penguin Pajamas: Danny felt a flush of embarrassment. Just then, he heard the laughter of a few of the older boys on his team. Danny knew that they were making fun of his dad. He hurried quickly into the locker room to get ready for practice. As he was getting ready, all he could think about were those ridiculous pants. Danny usually took this time to prepare and get focused on hockey, but he couldn't this morning, all he could think about were those pants and how embarrassed he felt. A few minutes later, when he skated out onto the ice, Danny glanced at his dad in the stands. There he was, standing with a group of other dads and they were all laughing. Danny felt a pang of sadness for his father. The other dads were probably making fun of him too.

Read the excerpt from the poem "Aerial View of Alaska":

The howling wind sends shivers down my spine,

And out of the corner of my eye, I see the controversial pipeline.

The snow, cold and crisp, crunches under my boot

As I set my foot down in the snow after the long commute.

Read the following short excerpt of student writing. use your vocabulary and grammar knowledge to determine which suggestions you would make to improve his or her grammar and word choice. i really thought she loved me but i discovered her grave betrayal one afternoon. it was easy to figure out because she accidentally sent a text to me that was meant for him. i was confused by the text because it said, "don't tell mike." i felt insulted that she thought she could get away with this infidelity. at first i felt very angry bitter and hateful but then i felt so hopeless and depressed. i longed for her to call me. i thought if i could just hear her pleasing voice, maybe then i would not be filled with such bitterness. instead of calling her i talked to another friend who is good at listening and feeling my pain. talking with her makes me feel euphoric. i think i may be on the road to recovery.what word would you suggest to replace the underlined word or words in this excerpt? instead of calling her, i talked to another friend who is (good at listening and feeling my pain). talking with her makes me feel euphoric. amorous sentimental empathetic grave

Read the excerpt from elie wiesel’s all rivers run to the sea. why were those trains allowed to roll unhindered into poland? why were the tracks leading to birkenau never bombed? i have put these questions to american presidents and generals and to high-ranking soviet officers. since moscow and washington knew what the killers were doing in the death camps, why was nothing done at least to slow down their “production”? that not a single allied military aircraft ever tried to destroy the rail lines converging on auschwitz remains an outrageous enigma to me. birkenau was “processing” ten thousand jews a day. stopping a single convoy for a single night—or even for just a few hours—would have prolonged so many lives. based on the paragraph, the author would most likely agree that it is best to avoid confrontation at all costs. people need to be proactive when they witness an injustice. countries should remain neutral to keep alliances strong. moscow and washington are to be blamed for the holocaust.
