1. Arachne was famous for her skill in weaving, the story of her contest with a goddess is well known.

2. Arachne claimed her weaving was as splendid as Minerva, the Roman goddess of weaving.

3. Leaming of Arachne's pride, Minerva disguised herself as an old woman and advised Arachne not to offend the goddess.

4. Arachne angrily replied that Minerva should engage in a weaving contest with her.

5. With that, Minerva threw off her disguise and accepted the challenge, the weavers set up looms.

6. While Minerva wove pictures of the god's famous deeds, Arachne wove scenes of their evil deeds.

7. When they were through, Minerva could find no fault

8. Her pride was so injured that Arachne put a noose around her neck and hanged herself.

9. Struck with pity, Minerva told Arachne she could keep her life even though she was rude and arrogant, Minerva added, however, that Arachne and her descendants would still hang.

10. As she left, Minerva sprinkled magic juices over Arachne the girl was changed into a spider, the handing weaver we all know today
