Is Boredom Really that Bad? Your alarm buzzes and you reach for your phone. First, you read text messages, and then you check social media. You post selfies on Insta..gram while you wait for the bus. Kids your age are the busiest kids in history. Kids need to take time to experience boredom.

Boredom is important for kids to experience. In the past, boredom was just a part of life. If your mom was late picking you up from school you just stood there. You didn't have a phone to entertain you in the car. You sat in the backseat and stared out the window. But today boredom is easy to avoid.

Some experts say that boredom is good for you. They say that boredom allows you time to think about how you feel. It helps you sort out confusing feelings, and remember fond memories. If you are never bored this thoughtful part of your brain doesn't work enough and it won't work as well.

Some people claim that boredom can lead to worry. This can be avoided if kids are taught to channel their thoughts into positive things. For example, a kid can imagine their dream job or think about their future. If adults teach kids to deal with boredom in a positive way there are many benefits.

Being able to do nothing happily is an important skill. So, take time to go for a walk without your phone, or stare out of the car window. You might find that you enjoy where your imagination takes you.
