Cousin Competition "Surely you know what a subway looks like?" Karan asked Jeffrey with a smirk. "Actually," Jeffrey responded, "I don't. I mean, I've seen pictures and videos of subways—I just haven't seen any in real life."
How would Jeffrey ever have seen a subway in real life? He had spent all his 12 years on a farm in rural Oregon, getting here and there via trucks, cars, tractors, plows, and the occasional horse. Even when he arrived in New York City the night before, Jeffrey and his mom traveled above-ground to get to his Uncle Barry's apartment, having taken a yellow taxi cab straight from the airport.
"You can't really expect me to have ever seen a subway before, Cousin Karan," Jeffrey offered. "It would be like me expecting you to know what the inside of a barn looks like." Jeffrey chuckled at the thought of his fancy, sophisticated cousin, Karan, wearing dirty boots and jeans in his barn back home—her hair unkempt, mud caked on her arms and face, looking as out of place as a fish on a bicycle.
"Of course I know what the inside of a barn looks like!" Karan demanded. "Everyone does."
"You do?" Jeffrey asked, surprised but suspicious. "When have you ever been in a barn?"
"Lots of times," Karan responded. "I just can't recall exactly when. It's been so many times, I just can't narrow it down to a single instance."
The smirk that had been plastered on Karan's face ever since Jeffrey walked in the door the night before had now jumped from one side of the room to the other, where it landed squarely under Jeffrey's nose.
But when he saw the defeated look on his cousin's face, Jeffrey knew it was time to decide where he wanted this relationship to go. He could choose to carry on in this power struggle and make the rest of his visit a competition with Karan, hoping he would win (whatever that meant). Or, he could choose to change the trajectory of their friction-filled relationship and attempt a peace offering to set this visit on a more congenial course.
"How about you take me for a ride on the subway," Jeffrey offered. Karan's face relit with a genuine smile, recognizing the olive branch that was being extended, despite her petty attempts at one-upmanship.
"Sounds like a plan," she said.

Which is the best way to summarize the passage?

A. Karan is delighted to find out that her cousin Jeffrey is unfamiliar with the subway. Jeffrey tries to reason with Karan by suggesting that there are things she is unfamiliar with as well. Karan pretends to know what the inside of a barn looks like so that she will look smarter than Jeffrey. Jeffrey decides to stop being competitive and make peace with his cousin by offering an outing that she will enjoy.

B. Karan enjoys talking about what life is like in New York City. Jeffrey just arrived in the city last night after taking an airplane from Oregon. Karan tells Jeffrey about the times she has been inside a barn. Jeffrey decides to challenge his cousin to a competition by suggesting that they take a subway ride together.

C. Karan is having a difficult time connecting with her cousin Jeffrey. Jeffrey is from Oregon and has very limited experience with things like subway rides. Karan pretends to know what the inside of a barn looks to make Jeffrey feel more comfortable in New York City. Jeffrey decides that he wants to improve his relationship with Karan by being kinder and less competitive.

D. Karan wants to take her cousin Jeffrey on a subway ride. Jeffrey does not know what a subway looks like. Karan tells Jeffrey that she has been inside of a barn several times but is having trouble remembering. Jeffrey decides to face the unknown and offers that he and his cousin go for a subway ride together.
