While many Americans do recycle a fair amount of what they use, there is still one big barrier left to overcome in the struggle to reduce consumption and the amount of garbage we produce: packaged foods. Look in your grocery bag the next time you come home from shopping, and just count all the boxes and packages. Although it is good to put pressure on manufacturers by writing letters and urging them to use recyclable packaging, this is more like a Band-Aid for the problem. Even if all the packaging were recyclable, it still requires energy to turn the used containers back into usable items. The only real solution is one that is particularly hard for us because it necessitates a change in lifestyle. We quite simply have to get back to basics and learn to live on more fresh foods as well as staples we can buy in bulk, like rice and other grains. It also means passing up that yummy tofu salad in the deli case and making it yourself at home. Likewise, it means not getting take-out food or at least getting it far less often. By doing this, we not only greatly reduce our own need to recycle used materials, but we put pressure on manufacturers at the same time. If we quit buying their wares, they will have to make changes, such as using containers that can be composted. Of course, it is good to write letters, too. That way the companies understand exactly why you have stopped buying their products. Then, they will know what they need to change to entice you back to using their products. Which of the following lines features the author's proposed method of creating change in the manufacturing and pachaging industries?
