Topic 1

This might be a difficult topic, but given our current situation, I think you’ll be able to provide some interesting ideas. Sappho has introduced the concept of equality. That’s a political concept. How does his remarkable poet introduce, in this (and other poems) political equality? She moves from heaven to earth. Can you think of any ways to compare Plato’s thoughts on love with Sappho?

Topic 2

Although we cannot yet use the word “romantic” for Sappho (that’s a later invention) when you read the fragments of her poems, it is clear that she is capable of profound feelings. This topic will allow you to look specifically at her metaphors as they relate to passion. How does love effect her body? How does it effect her language? If you recall the Plato dialogue, can you think of one main difference between poetry and philosophy? You might also want to compare the difference between the rationality (and the myth) of the philosopher with the way Sappho describes what we would call a broken heart?

As always, I encourage you to think about a personal topic, something that you may have discovered in yourself in the act of reading. Like poetry, all of us know what love is. Putting our thoughts and feelings into words is another matter. That takes time and introspection. Here’s a word I want you to become familiar with as we move into the second part of the course. Interiority. We live in two worlds, one inside ourselves, one outside in the world. Our self-reflection, in journals and essays, is a sign of our interiority and how capable we are of thinking of ourselves and everything else in the world.
