Read this excerpt from a short story about a community garden. Rosa Lee usually had a difficult time getting out of bed early in the morning, but not on
Saturday mornings in the spring summer, and fall. That is because Saturday was garden
day. The earlier Rosa got out of bed, the earlier she and her mother could leave for the
community garden. Then they would have more time to spend in the garden among the
plants, vegetables, and flowers.
On one Saturday morning in early June, Rosa was very eager to see how the tomato
plants in their plot were growing. She and her mother had planted tomato seedlings a
week earlier. She wondered if the seedlings had grown bigger.
