Activity 4D: Examining the Structure of the Text - Compare and Contrast
Paragraph Scramble
This activity has been adapted from the California Reading and Literature Project. The
sentences that follow are from a paragraph comparing and contrasting emigration and
immigration. The order of these sentences has been scrambled. Working with a partner or small
group, arrange these sentences in an order that makes sense as a complete paragraph. Use
your knowledge of signal words to unscramble the paragraph.
1. Thus, we can say a person emigrates from a place and immigrates into a place.
2. Many people confuse the terms emigration and immigration.
3. This word starts with the prefix e-, which means "out" or "away from."
4. Both the term emigration and the term immigration describe aspects of transnational
