a divided america
when a country has a population upwards of 324 million people it is hard for every single person to be united as one. it is practically impossible for a group of that number to agree on anything. this country is the united states of america. america is largely made of immigrants. many of the immigrants who came to america were searching religious freedom. freedom of religion leads to thousands of different religions that divides its people even more. america’s variety of faiths, rough history, and rich diversity results in a divided nation.
religion is a large part of people’s live america. however, the amount of various religions divides us. the united states has a surprising “2,000 religious denominations” (document 3). while some people claim that faith unites us since “more than sixty percent” (document 3) of americans consider themselves a part of a specific religion, the amount of different religions and religious beliefs pull us apart. a few examples include christianity, judaism, islam, buddhism, and so many more that all come with their own set of beliefs. some of these beliefs interfere with laws and cause huge debates. for instance, in christianity, gay marriage is not allowed. this caused a problem when a large group of people wanted to legalize gay marriage. when a large group of people has many different views on how things should be, it causes issues and does not to unite the nation.
even since the beginning of it all, america has never truly been one. key issues that were present in the past are still relevant today. some not so proud events in america’s history include “slavery… [,] sweatshops, the burning of crosses, and … ostracism of” each other (document 1). while slavery does not any longer pertains to today’s society, the obstacle of ostracism is still prominent. all the time stories of racial police shootings are in the news. ostracism, or exclusion, is another concerning problem facing the country. majorities exclude minorities for their religion, gender, sexuality, or opinions. in the whole two hundred and thirty-nine years that
america has been a country, we could never accept each other. a nation that excludes entire groups of people is not united.
america is a country made up of immigrants who have rich cultural backgrounds. even many of those born in the states celebrate the culture of their ancestors. this “clinging to ethnicity … has undermined the concept of unity.” (document 1) america is not one because the people who make up the nation are all so different. regularly, they bring up their differences, and even celebrate them. similar to the separation of religions, people from different cultures and backgrounds may have different opinions and customs, which may cause additional problematic situations. it is not considered unity if a country’s people have such a massive amount of dissimilarity among them.
all in all, america is a country filled with all different types of people. the purpose many have in mind when they come to the country, freedom of religion results in thousands of different practices of religion with many different views and beliefs. the people of america also have many different beliefs because of their plentiful diversity and backgrounds. over in america, there is a rich history of people dividing themselves by excluding minorities. americans have too many differences to be united, as it is extremely difficult for such a large group who has so many disagreements to be united as one whole.
