What might make a monster frightening? What might make it endearing?

well most classical depictions of monsters are different and scary. But what if the monster looked just like humans? And acted like us? I think that might be scarier. An endearing thing is what if the monster is actually a good person but has a scary appearance or a different appearance.or it could be cute or something.
