Ishmael Beah is a human rights activist and an author. The Sierra Leone civil war started in 1991. Beah's hometown, Mogbwemo was invaded by the rebels, which is located in the southern province of Sierra Leone. As the rebels invaded he was forced to flee and separated from his family. With the other group of boys in the south, he wandered for months. Hence, he was forced to become a child soldier at the age of 12.
