William Penn was born in England in 1644. He became a Quaker (a type of religion) when he was in his early twenties. Since there was no religious freedom in England, Penn was frequently
persecuted (punished) for his beliefs. In 1681, Penn was given land in the New World (the
United States) by King Charles II. In 1682, Penn decided to go to the United States, where he
established (started) a colony (a group of people) in Pennsylvania. It was intended to be a place
where people could enjoy freedom of religion.
