Brian's mental attitude and toughness are enhanced through Perpich's lesson. Brian recognizes that panicking and undermining his own resolve will not help him. To "stay on top of things," Brian must be focused and recognize that each step towards survival is the only way he will find success.

The skunk has also eaten the eggs he had stored on the shore. Brian learned two lessons from this incident: make a sturdy shelter and put food in a protected place.
