Why is it always a bad idea to use ad hominem in an argument?

It is a bad idea to use ad hominem in an argument, after all,  you are letting the other person win because you are attacking the other person. You are letting that person get the best of your emotions which means more power of them. It is always good to know how to control your emotions.
