INTRODUCTION: Our house on Baker Street was the only home I had ever known. I could not imagine my life anywhere else, and I didn’t want to. My dad’s company had him transferred out of the state, and I was nervous about moving and having to start all over. I wasn’t sure what to expect and that thought scared me. Moving to a new neighborhood right before the beginning of sixth grade was hard, but it brought me closer to my family and pushed me to try something new.

BODY: Moving to a new place during summer vacation was tough. I thought it would be a long, boring summer. Luckily, I have three siblings. We got along well, but we never spent much time together. That summer changed everything. We spent a lot of time swimming at the local swimming pool and exploring the city (Centerville). We got to know each other better and learned that we enjoyed spending time with each other. Since then, we’ve been able to develop new friendships with people in Centerville, but we continue to enjoy spending time together. My siblings even supported my idea of trying out for a singing contest that was held in the city. I had never sung in public, but I decided to do something I wasn't comfortable with. I practiced for weeks, but I was still nervous about performing in front of everyone. When I took to the stage, I fed off the crowd’s excitement and enjoyed every minute. I ended up taking first place in my age group and was heralded as an “up-and-coming star” of the community (Morris). Taking a chance and stepping outside of my comfort zone allowed me to find something that I’m passionate about doing.

CONCLUSION: Although I miss my old friends, moving has been a wonderful opportunity for me to develop better relationships with my siblings and a talent that I never dreamed of sharing with others. If we hadn’t moved to Centerville, I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to create great relationships with my siblings or to take the chance on performing. While I thought the move would be the end of life as I knew it, it quickly helped me develop my personal identity in respect to my family relationships and talents. I’m thankful for my parents’ decision to move to Centerville and the ways that it has affected my life.
