If the wind blows hard enough, it can kick up the sand. This leads to dust storms, which are dangerous for all who live near the dunes. Sand also damages buildings that can be centuries old. For example, sand threatens buildings in Egypt, including the pyramids. The sand can break down the stones that made the pyramids.

Though there are easy ways to keep sand dunes from moving, not all are good for the environment. For years, oil has been used to stop sand dunes from moving. People drench the sand dunes with oil, and the sand no longer is picked up by the wind. This is not good for the animals living in and around the dunes. It also wastes an important resource.

One way of safely keeping the dunes from moving as quickly is to plant trees and other plants along them. These plants keep the dunes from moving when placed at the bottom of the dunes. The dunes stay in place and keep the animals living in the dunes safe. Scientists are also working on the best design possible for sand fences. These would keep the dunes in place and let the animals continue to live there.
