The following passage (paragraph 6) mainly suggests that Enlightenment thinkers believed The late eighteenth century was punctuated with social and political unrest, which influenced (and was influenced by) Enlightenment ideals.
People wanted to think for themselves and have a say in how their governments functioned. This progress, some believed, meant that traditional
structures, such as the monarchy, the privileged ruling class, and the political power of the Catholic Church, had to be removed. The clash
between the new and the traditional violently erupted with the famous Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, which marked the beginning of
the French Revolution. Although the Enlightenment-era revolutions were historic moments and successful in many ways, they did not always
result in a more equal and free society. The French revolutionaries, for example, wanted to replace the monarchy with a government by the
people, but violence continued throughout the 1790s, leading eventually to Napoleon Bonaparte crowning himself emperor in 1804.
O A. government was burdensome and unnecessary to a society
B. all kings and queens had to be murdered in order to make progress
C. traditional institutions' claims to authority were unfounded
D. countries should be run by common people, such as farmers
