The theme of the story is how the idea of karma works, meaning that what goes around comes around. In this case, the idea of our actions having consequences in our future is used to express the importance of taking care of our environment because whatever we do to it will have consequences on our way of living.

Explanation:

The concessionaire that offers the hole to dump anything people might want to get rid of ends up putting the village in danger as we learn by the end that all that has been thrown into the hole will fall from the sky.

The reader realizes this when the first item that had been thrown into the hole, a pebble, falls from the sky without nobody, not even the workman standing next to it, noticing it. We can then assume that all the nuclear waste and garbage will eventually fall from the sky as well.
