If I were in Elijah’s place, here are the possible outcomes I would consider in deciding which path to take:  

If I took my normal route, I’d be late for basketball team tryouts. So I’d have to choose between the other two paths. I would probably arrive on time if I took either of these shorter paths.  

Sticking to the city sidewalks would be safer and more familiar, although crossing the street with all those people could slow me down. The wooded path might be uneven and full of obstacles. I could injure myself. In the end, I’d choose the wooded path. It would probably be nice and relaxing. I’d just have to be careful about where I step as I run.
