Eben, his brother, is in the military. Nate doesn't want to pick potatoes because he feels it's not a work for a man. " Nate closed his eyes and imagined himself with a musket in his calloused hands. It was the second year and he was no closer to fighting." This explains that he wants to be in the military, but he can't because he is still not at the right age for that job.

After dinner he went outside to get some water. Then a few soilders came into view. They wanted food and shelter. He told his father he'll get water and roast potatoes. "Strangely, he found himself smiling..." It turn out that he might have actually liked his job now.
